In our attempts to connect and help, we can cause others to feel as though they are "other," or not as deserving, or as able as the majority. Javier Vela, Associate Professor, Chemistry, recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Advancing One Community Faculty Award and a pioneer of change for the cultural climate of ISU, will help you develop your cultural literacy.

Throughout his career, Dr. Vela has increased cultural understanding, awareness, and fostered conversations among people from different backgrounds. You will leave this session with practical ways to create a welcoming classroom environment, what to do when something that is not inclusive happens, and ways to challenge and reframe your own thinking to help create future world citizens who must be ready and able to work "among others."
