The DSN S 546: Products of Public Space studio will host this lecture by Mike Nelson, president of Nelson Construction and Development, Des Moines, who will speak about his redevelopment of several historic buildings in downtown Des Moines. Nelson spoke at the 2011 TED Des Moines conference on his progressive new housing concepts for 20-somethings in Iowa's largest urban center. He'll expand on this to include recent works.

Taught by Kevin Owens, lecturer in industrial design, Products of Public Space is an interdisciplinary, experimental learning studio that exposes upper-level students to a range of real-world issues of public space in the Greater Des Moines region and beyond. Students then use their expertise to propose creative interventions for Des Moines that focus on entertainment and tourism; economic development; recreation and quality of life; vibrant urban experience; technology development; reversing the "brain drain"; sustainable energy; sustainable watershed; creation of new business models; and lifestyle choices for all generations.
