Presented by Denver Art Museum Provenance department - Lori Iliff, Senior Provenance Researcher; Renee Albiston, Associate Provenance Researcher; and, Mac Coyle, Provenance Research Fellow

Provenance is information about an artwork's history of ownership from its creation to the present. As an essential part of ethical collecting practices, provenance research is used to verify an object's artist, authenticity, and legal ownership. While repatriation may be one outcome of this research, the primary goal of provenance research is to add context to an object's history and trace its journey to the museum. Today, museums with global art collections face many legal, ethical, and historical considerations that guide collection policies, practices, and provenance research priorities. Join the staff of the Denver Art Museum's Provenance Research Department as they present case studies and contextualize collections impacted by current cultural patrimony concerns, including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Nazi-era looting, theft surrounding ancient art and archaeological sites, and Colonial-era injustices.

This program is supported by John F. and Nancy J. Wiederspan.
