Colleges and universities are committing resources to re-design classroom spaces to promote active, participatory, and experiential learning (Harvey & Kenyon, 2013; Oblinger, 2006). This case study will discuss an assessment of an Active Learning Classroom (ALC) as part of a campus wide evaluation of learning spaces at Iowa State University.

The assessment investigated how instructors utilized the ALC's design to promote active learning and what impact the design had on student learning from students' and instructors' perspectives. Utilizing focus groups to understand how students and faculty made meaning of their experiences in the ALC, the findings serve the dual purpose of providing evidence on the use and impact of classroom space on learning and inform decisions on classroom design to promote active learning strategies.
