It's important for authors to be active promoters of their own work, and most scholars understand the need to publicize their books after publication. But what about before publication? How should marketing considerations inform the entire publication process?

This presentation will explore how savvy authors integrate market considerations in every step of the publishing process, from the book proposal to post-publication publicity. We'll focus on a guiding principle - know your audience - and discuss how this should inform framing your argument, developing a book proposal, approaching publishers, and writing the manuscript. Of course, we'll also highlight the important post-publication efforts and discuss best practices for developing a social media platform and partnering with your publisher to market the book itself.

Kate Wahl is Publishing Director and Editor-in-Chief at Stanford University Press, where she oversees the editorial program and acquires titles for SUP's Middle East studies list. Kate joined SUP in 2001. Prior to this, she worked in marketing and corporate communications and in undergraduate college admissions. Kate holds degrees in religious studies and violin performance. She remains an active musician in the San Francisco Bay Area, and is Assistant Concertmaster of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra.
